Recruitment event with Diageo and Positive to Work Skillnet

The Learning for Life Programme is led by one of Irelands leading companies and employers, Diageo Ireland. Diageo are the world's largest producer of spirits and a key producer of beer. They produce the famous Irish stout “Guinness”, brewed in Dublin at the St James Gate Brewery.

Learning for Life is part of Diageo’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme designed to inspire and transform the lives of people throughout the different communities in which Diageo conducts business. With a focus on adult education, the programme is implemented in partnership with local educational, governmental, and training organisations. It equips participants with work and life skills that will enable them to find employment.

Participants who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a Certificate in Professional Food and Beverage Service Skills.

the programme provides the following training

Health and Safety in the Workplace

Customer Service in the Hospitality Industry

Team Work

Bar and Food Service Skills

Personal Effectiveness

Communications (presentation, listening and work skills)

Cash Handling and managing tills


Learning Tours to top Visitor Attractions

Workplace skills and employment practices

Work Practice

Responsible serving of alcohol

Understanding Tourism in Ireland

Irish Culture

Work placements and mentoring


The training is 5 days a week for 12 weeks including 4 weeks work experience to put the skills you have acquired into practice.  This may be in a hotel, bar or restaurant.    

The initial 8 weeks training will take place in the local Hospitality training centre (venue to be confirmed) where you will be trained in the practical aspects of food and beverage service skills.  

The course will start beginning February 2020.

can i apply for the programme?

This programme is specifically aimed at persons who have received a positive decision on their application for international protection

  • This program is open to persons of all ages
  • You will need to have a good standard of English and ability to use this in a work context.
  • Have no objection to working weekends, late evenings or nights
  • Have no objection to working in places where alcohol is served and consumed
  • Must have permit to work in Ireland


To be considered for this training programme participants are required to be:

            at least 21 years of age,


          aged between 18 and 20 and out of the formal education  system for at least 2 years,

and in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance or Jobseekers Benefit and have received a total of at least 6 months (156 days) of unemployment payment during his/her current period of unemployment.

I would like to apply, what do i do next?

An information session will be held on Tuesday 11th February 2020 at 09.30am at our Intreo Centre, Fairgreen Road, Galway city .  Here you can meet representatives of Diageo and trainers from the programme who will answer any questions you may have and to give you more information.

Interested candidates will be asked to stay on after the information meeting. A one to one conversation will be used to help select the most suitable candidates for the programme. If successful, the training programme will start end February 2020.
