Lay-off and Redundancy Information

What is redundancy?

What is redundancy?

Redundancy is what happens when you lose your job because your employer is either closing the business or reducing the number of staff. A redundancy occurs where your job in the company no longer exists, you are let go and are not replaced. Also, if a lay-off goes on for certain period of time, you may be entitled to claim for redundancy.  For more information see Redundancy Payments - DETE (enterprise.gov.ie)

  • What is systematic short-time?

Systematic short-time work applies where the employees of the business had been working full time but whose weekly hours of work were reduced by the business and there is an expectation that full-time working will resume within a reasonable period.

What is a temporary lay off?

A lay-off is when your employer tells you that they expect you to have no work for a temporary period and you will not be paid.

Your employer may lay you off or reduce your working hours (put you on short-time) for a number of weeks. This can happen if there is a lack of work available or changes to the financial circumstances of the business.

The difference between a lay off and short-time can be confusing and you have different rights in each situation.

A lay-off is when your employer tells you that they expect you to have no work for a temporary period and you will not be paid. If a lay-off goes on for certain period of time, you may be entitled to claim for redundancy.
