This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.


We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with aspirations of becoming a journalist to join the team at the Sligo Weekender. The Assistant Reporter will be trained in a variety of areas which will enhance their skills to produce high quality written content and a full understanding of how a newspaper is designed and prepared for publication.
Training will take place in our Sligo office where the individual will report directly to the editor and work closely with the newsroom team and represent the company in the Sligo community.

 
Researching and writing news stories
Conducting interviews in person and over the phone or Zoom
Covering county council meetings
Use of some Adobe systems
Representing the Sligo Weekender at local events and festivals

The Assistant Reporter's training will include:

Formal Training
Be trained on how to use the programme InDesign
Learning how to use Photoshop
Being thought and demonstrations in the use of Bridge

Informal Training 
Training will be given on how to conduct and write interviews so you Gain and enhance skills to report on a wide range of local stories
How to conduct and write interviews and features on Sligo-related people and topics
Being mentored and coached on how to represent Sligo Weekender at local events and festivals which they will learn how to report on
Learning the process of reporting on local council meetings
Being coached and mentored by the editor and the newsroom on how to put together from everyone responsible for the design of the Sligo Weekender
Working closely with the editor and the newsroom to develop a good understanding of the process of formulating and delivering ideas which will produce high quality content
