The HGV Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the company’s fleet of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), vans, and related equipment. The role ensures that all vehicles are maintained to the highest safety and compliance standards in line with Road Safety Authority (RSA) and CVRT requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out routine servicing, inspections, and preventive maintenance of HGVs and company vehicles.

Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults using appropriate diagnostic tools.

Perform repairs including engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, exhaust, tyres, and bodywork.

Complete CVRT preparation and ensure vehicles are maintained in roadworthy condition.

Maintain accurate records of all work completed (service logs, defect reports, maintenance schedules).

Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform roadside repairs where necessary.

Work in line with Health & Safety procedures, using PPE and safe workshop practices.

Assist in ordering parts and managing workshop stock.

Liaise with drivers and management regarding vehicle defects and service requirements.

Support training and development of junior mechanics/apprentices (if applicable).

Skills & Experience

Qualified HGV Mechanic (National Craft Certificate, City & Guilds, or equivalent).

Experience working with HGVs, vans, trailers, and plant equipment.

Strong knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.

Ability to use diagnostic equipment and interpret technical manuals.

Full clean driving licence (HGV licence desirable but not essential).

Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Strong commitment to Health & Safety and compliance standards.

Desirable

RSA CVRT test preparation experience.

Knowledge of tachograph systems.

Welding and fabrication skills.

ADR knowledge (fuel/oil transport vehicles).
