This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.
This placement provides a structured learning experience within a professional dog daycare setting. The participant will observe, assist, and learn under the direct supervision of experienced staff, developing a strong foundation of knowledge and introductory practical skills in animal care. The focus is on supporting the participant to build confidence, awareness, and transferable skills relevant to future employment in the animal care sector. Participants will gain experience in: Assisting with daily care routines for dogs of various breeds and temperaments under supervision Supporting staff in maintaining safety, hygiene, and welfare standards within the daycare environment Observing and assisting with reading and interpreting canine body language and behaviour Assisting with supervised group play, feeding, and enrichment activities Communicating effectively with team members and clients under guidance Accessing online industry-specific training, including modules on animal welfare, health and safety, and canine behaviour
This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP. Formal Training Participants will receive structured and guided instruction, including: Canine behaviour awareness training Health and safety in the workplace, including hygiene protocols and risk awareness Online industry-specific learning resources to reinforce understanding and support progress Informal Training Participants will also benefit from ongoing guidance and mentoring, including: Daily supervised practice and observation, assisting experienced staff with animal care activities Regular feedback and reflection sessions with mentors to develop confidence and competence Soft-skills development, including teamwork, communication, time management, and customer service Simple progress tracking, enabling participants to review their learning and achievements with their mentor Outcomes of Placement By the end of the placement, participants will have: Assisted with and demonstrated understanding of safe animal handling and care routines Developed knowledge of dog care practices and canine behaviour Improved confidence in teamwork and communication, applicable to other work environments Gained readiness for further training or employment in animal care or customer- facing roles
