First Year Apprentice VacancyA Dairy Farm Manager apprenticeship position is available on a dry grass-based dairy farm in mid-Tipperary (Gortnahoe: between Urlingford and Horse and Jockey) with a commencement date of September 15th 2026. The apprentice will work alongside the farm manager, relief staff and contractors on a spring calving 240 cow dairy herd. The system of farming is grass-based with appropriate stocking rates, milking and wintering accomadation and technology (auto-calf feeding and auto heat detection) and with replacements contract reared to make a simple system with all machinery work undertaken by contractors.
The farm is run as a compact seasonal calving pasture-based operation with good facilities, focused on cow care and grassland management and labour efficiency. The position is designed for the successful candidate to work within a high performance environment within a 40 hr working week, an attractive remuneration package and with significant support from the farm manager and farm owners who work off-farm. Our farming hours are 7am to 5pm with essential work at weekends only. We also run a 1 in 3 weekend work roster for most of the year.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for pasture-based dairy farming, a strong desire to learn and progress to share farming potentially within the current farm business and good communication skills to work as part of a team with other farm staff, farm owners, contractors etc. are essential. The key responsibilities of the apprentice are to become proficient in milking and stock management, grassland management, herd health management, health and safety on farm, and undertaking training & development within the apprenticeship framework to improve farm performance and potentially progressing to share farming during the 2 yr period.
