This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.


We are pleased to offer a hands-on and dynamic work experience placement opportunity for a barbering assistant as part of the Work Placement Experience Programme (WPEP). This placement is designed to give the participant practical experience in a professional barbering environment while supporting their development in essential industry skills. 
 
•	Familiarisation with Barbering Tools - Understanding, identifying, and correctly using a range of barbering tools and equipment, including knowledge of their purpose and maintenance.
•	General Salon Upkeep - Assisting in maintaining a clean, organised, and professional environment, including the regular sanitation of tools, equipment, and work areas.
•	Cash Handling and Till Operation - Developing skills in processing transactions, handling cash accurately, providing correct change, and operating the till system in a professional manner.
•	Booking and Appointment Management - Supporting the scheduling of client appointments both in person and over the phone, while gaining experience using salon booking systems effectively.
•	Haircutting Skills - Observing and practising basic haircutting techniques under supervision, with a focus on precision, safety, and client satisfaction.
•	Styling and Shaving Techniques - Assisting with and developing skills in hair styling, as well as traditional shaving and grooming services, appropriate to their level of training.
•	Teamwork - Working collaboratively with senior barbers and team members to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the salon.
•	Customer Service - Building confidence in welcoming clients, understanding their needs, and contributing to a positive and professional client experience.
•	Assisting Senior Barbers - Providing support with appointment preparation, equipment setup, and post-service cleaning and organisation.
 
This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.

The participant will receive formal/ informal training in the following

Formal Training:
1.	Health and Safety Training:
• Introduction to workplace health & safety regulations (HSA guidelines)
• Proper use and sanitation of tools and equipment 
• Fire safety procedures and first aid basics 
2.	Barbering Techniques (Beginner to Intermediate Level):
• Clipper work and scissor cutting 
• Fading and tapering techniques 
• Beard trimming and shaping 
• Shampooing and conditioning techniques 
3.	Customer Service & Client Care:
• Greeting and consulting with clients professionally 
• Managing client expectations and handling complaints 
• Booking and scheduling appointments using salon software 
4.	Salon Hygiene & Cleanliness:
• Daily cleaning routines and hygiene standards 
• Disinfection and sterilisation of tools 
• Waste management and cross-contamination prevention 
5.	Retail & Product Knowledge:
• Introduction to hair and beard care products 
• How to recommend and upsell retail products to clients 
6.	Shadowing Senior Barbers:
• Observation and hands-on support during client sessions 
• Regular review sessions and feedback from senior staff
 

Informal Training 
1.	Daily Mentoring by Senior Barber(s) 
• Ongoing tips, advice, and demonstrations during work hours 
• Real-time corrections and technique improvement 
2.	Team Integration and Salon Etiquette 
• Encouragement of teamwork and communication 
• Learning salon flow and interpersonal dynamics 
3.	Soft Skills Development 
• Confidence building through customer interaction 
• Time management and multitasking in a fast-paced environment 
4        Exposure to a Variety of Hair Types and Styles 
• Learning adaptiveness by working with a diverse clientele 
• Encouragement to ask questions and seek guidance
