Job Description
The HGV Mechanic will carry out inspection, maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work on heavy goods vehicles and associated systems. The role involves ensuring all vehicles meet manufacturer, safety, and regulatory standards while maintaining high levels of technical accuracy and efficiency.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Perform detailed visual inspections and diagnostic testing using specialised equipment to identify mechanical and electrical faults.
Inspect, maintain, and repair hydraulic systems including hydraulic brakes, power steering, and related components.
Remove, dismantle, repair, and replace defective parts; fabricate or modify components where necessary using appropriate tools and equipment.
Reassemble, test, calibrate, and tune components, systems, or complete engines to ensure correct performance.
Conduct routine servicing, including replacement of oil and air filters, brake components, suspension checks, and other scheduled maintenance tasks.
Overhaul and rebuild major assemblies such as engines, transmissions, axles, and differentials; carry out wheel alignment and balancing.
Diagnose and repair advanced electrical and electronic systems including engine management systems, onboard diagnostics, and vehicle wiring.
Replace faulty electrical/electronic components and verify system integrity following repair.
Undertake welding and fabrication work for structural repairs or custom modifications.
Install additional electrical equipment or accessories when required.
Service and repair vehicle air-conditioning, heating, and cooling systems.
Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and adhere to manufacturer-recommended service schedules.
Provide guidance and support to apprentices or junior mechanics within the workshop.
Maintain accurate records of completed work, parts used, inspections carried out, and diagnostic findings.
Stay updated on emerging vehicle technologies, diagnostic methods, and safety regulations through continuous professional development.
Requirements
Fully qualified Motor or HGV Mechanic (National Craft Certificate or equivalent).
Minimum of 5 years’ post-qualification experience in HGV or commercial vehicle maintenance and repair.
Strong diagnostic and technical skills across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems.
Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools and general computer applications.
Fluent written and spoken English.
HGV licence is advantageous but not essential.
Hard-working, reliable, enthusiastic, and capable of working independently or within a team.
Strong commitment to safety and adherence to workshop standards.
