This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.


Applicants should supply suitable character references and be prepared to complete a Garda vetting application form.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about horses to join our team as a Yard Assistant on a 6 month placement. The role will provide you with hands on experience in stable routines, horse handling and grooming and is designed to support your learning and acquisition of skills in horse care and management.

The Equestrian Yard Assistant will be supported and supervised to gain experience in the following areas:
•	Mucking out stables, cleaning tack/equipment, sweeping of the yard,
•	Feeding / preparing hay bags
•	Grooming and tacking up
•	Leading horses / ponies to and from the fields
•	Leading ponies during lessons
•	Taking specific responsibilities for horse welfare and management
•	Overall general upkeep of the yard and equestrian yard facilities

•	Equine Wellbeing and Welfare:  With the assistance of experienced staff – the reporting any horse related issues to the Yard Supervisor or Yard Manager at the point of occurrence.
•	Stable Operations: Under the supervision and support of the Yard Supervisor or Yard Manager, prepare equines for timetabled activities,
•	Seasonal Events: Under the supervision and support of the Yard Supervisor, assist with yard-based activities during the seasonal event programmes 
•	Health & Safety: With the guidance and support of the Yard Supervisor, comply with the Health & Safety requirements of the organisation and legislation.

This is a training and work experience opportunity and no prior experience in this role is necessary.

Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module, which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.

Formal Training:
•	QQI Level 4: Horsemanship through Festina Lente
•	Applicants are also eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.

Informal Training:
•	Daily supervision from experienced yard assistants and yard manager
•	Daily mentoring from experienced yard assistants and yard manager
•	Practical demonstrations and supervised practice in all aspects of grooming, handling and yard routines
•	Opportunities to learn through observation and hands on involvement with a range of skilled professionals related to the activities in the yard
