A healthcare assistant (HCA) in Ireland provides essential support to patients across homecare settings, assisting with daily living, health monitoring, and emotional support.

Role Overview
Healthcare Assistants  play a critical role in improving patients’ quality of life, supporting individuals of all ages, including the elderly, children, disabled, or terminally ill patients 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of an HCA vary by workplace but generally include:

Personal Care: Assisting patients with bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, and mobility 
Health Monitoring: Taking vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, and reporting changes to nursing staff 
Mobility and Rehabilitation: Helping patients move, exercise, or use assistive devices safely 
Emotional Support: Providing companionship, reassurance, and interaction, particularly for patients who may be isolated 
Hygiene and Environment: Maintaining cleanliness, ensuring safe and hygienic surroundings, and following infection control procedures 
Administrative Assistance: Supporting nurses with documentation, stocking supplies, and escorting patients to departments as needed 

Qualifications and Skills:

To work as a healthcare assistant in Ireland, candidates typically need:

Educational Requirements: A QQI Level 5 qualification (formerly FETAC) in healthcare, or equivalent qualifications or care skills 
Experience: At least 2 years of previous care experience will be preferred 

Mandatory Checks: Completion of Garda Vetting to ensure safety and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals 
Personal Qualities: Compassion, patience, communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team 
Working Conditions:
HCAs usually work a 39-hour week, with shifts that may vary between 8 am and 8 pm, including weekends, depending on the roster 
The role can be physically demanding, requiring adherence to moving and handling guidelines and infection control protocols
