This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.


As a Waste Management Assistant, you will join an experienced team, supporting the day-to-day operations of our waste collection and environmental services. Under supervision you will gain practical, hands-on experience by observing and assisting with the safe collection, handling, transportation, and disposal of waste and recyclable materials while learning how the business operates efficiently and in compliance with environmental and health and safety regulations.

Throughout the placement, you will develop a broad range of practical and transferable skills, including waste handling procedures, recycling practices, manual handling techniques, customer service, teamwork, communication, time management, and health and safety awareness. You will also gain an understanding of route planning, vehicle checks, operational procedures, and the importance of delivering a reliable and professional service.

You will have the opportunity to observe industry best practices, build confidence in a real working environment, and develop the knowledge and skills required for employment within the waste management and environmental services sector. This placement is designed to provide a solid foundation for anyone interested in pursuing a career in waste management, recycling, logistics, or related industries.

As part of your placement, you will be encouraged to take an active role in supporting daily operations while working under the supervision of experienced colleagues. You will become familiar with the safe use of equipment and tools, the correct procedures for loading and unloading waste, and the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and efficiency. You will gain an understanding of how waste is collected, transported safely, and processed in accordance with environmental legislation and company procedures.

The placement will also provide an opportunity to develop an awareness of sustainability and the role that responsible waste management plays in protecting the environment. You will learn about the importance of reducing waste, increasing recycling rates, and ensuring that materials are disposed of responsibly. In addition, you will gain experience working as part of a professional team, following instructions, meeting deadlines, communicating effectively with colleagues and supervisors, and demonstrating a positive and proactive approach to your work. You will also develop a greater understanding of workplace responsibilities, the importance of reliability and punctuality, and the value of contributing to an efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible waste management operation.

This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.
