Duties

The Darkroom Assistant & Print Assistant will be responsible for operating the Cork Film Centre photography darkroom and its printing facilities in Sample Studios. They will be involved in managing the equipment and the chemical processes, photo/negative scanning and digitisation, digital photo editing (Photoshop), and other specialised tasks such as basic graphic design and digital printing. The Darkroom Assistant and Print Manager will handle tasks such as film processing and printing from negatives. Their role will involve working with and assisting artists in producing exhibition quality work, assisting in the use of chemicals, enlargers, timing, etc. They will also assist artists with preparing their artwork for printing, e.g. scaling, cropping, retouching, and repositioning from their original files. The Darkroom Assistant and Print Manager will be responsible for keeping the darkroom and studio area neat and tidy, scheduling use of the facilities, and for managing inventory and supplies. Some basic skills are desired. Training will be given in all technical skills. Skills desired: Good communication skills: Basic computer knowledge; Basic understanding of Photoshop or similar digital software; Basic knowledge of the photographic process; Skills learned/developed: Darkroom film processing; Use of digital photographic tools; Use of design and print software; Digital Print preparation and management; Digital file management; Studio management.
