The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) supports the dental team in providing safe, inclusive, and compassionate care to immobile patients, wheelchair users, and individuals with special needs. Working alongside dentists and dental nurses, the HCA ensures patients receive appropriate physical and emotional assistance throughout their visit. Key responsibilities include helping patients move safely using approved manual-handling techniques, supporting transfers to dental chairs or specialised equipment, and ensuring comfort and dignity at all times. The HCA prepares treatment rooms, organises accessibility aids such as hoists and wheelchair recliners, and maintains a clean, safe clinical environment in line with infection-control standards. The role also involves assisting with patient communication, adapting approaches for those with cognitive, behavioural, or sensory challenges. This may include working closely with carers, using visual or verbal prompts, and helping patients understand procedures. The HCA may support with basic administrative tasks, monitoring patient wellbeing, and ensuring smooth patient flow throughout the clinic.
