We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Lab Assistant to join our specialised parasitology laboratory. The primary focus of this role is to process and analyse sheep faecal samples using Faecal Egg Count (FEC) techniques to determine parasite burdens (e.g., gut worms, liver fluke, coccidia), larval culture and pasture larval sampling for gut worms. The results generated will help researchers to monitor parasite levels, manage anthelmintic resistance, and ensure sustainable worm control practices.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Receipt and Management: Receive and log incoming samples. Ensure proper labelling, storage and integrity of samples for accurate analysis.
Sample Preparation: Perform high-volume preparation of faecal samples, pasture samples and flotation solutions/buffers by following Teagasc SOPs.
FEC Analysis: Conduct modified McMaster, Mini-FLOTAC and FECPAK FEC techniques to identify and count parasite eggs (e.g. Strongyles, Nematodirus, Coccidia) under various laboratory microscopes.
Pasture Larval Samples: Collect and process pasture samples to enumerate pasture larval contamination.
Data Entry and Reporting: Accurately record data into the Laboratory Record Books.
Equipment Maintenance: Clean, sterilise, and maintain lab equipment, including microscopes, balances, centrifuge and counting slides.
Laboratory Cleanliness and Safety: Adhere strictly to biohazardous waste disposal procedures. Keep work areas clean and sterilised and adhere to safety protocols for handling animal biosolid materials.
Quality Control: Participate in quality control procedures to ensure accurate results.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Diploma in an animal science related discipline is desirable.
Experience: Previous experience working in a diagnostic, veterinary, or microbiology laboratory is a strong advantage.
Skills:
Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately.
	Proficiency in using microscopes.
Basic computer skills for data entry.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet daily deadlines.
Ability to work as part of a team.
	Good laboratory practice.
Working Conditions:
This role involves working with biological samples, including faeces and may involve working with animals.
PPE (lab coats, gloves, lab safety goggles) must be worn at all times.
